What is WCAG 2.1 AA?
The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 AA is the standard named in the federal rule. In practice it means: images have descriptions, text has enough contrast, everything works with a keyboard alone, videos have captions, and forms tell screen readers what each field is for.
When is the deadline for my organization?
Public entities serving 50,000 or more people: April 26, 2027. Public entities under 50,000 and special district governments: April 26, 2028. HHS-funded organizations fall under Section 504 instead: May 11, 2027 with 15 or more employees, May 10, 2028 with fewer.
Does this really apply to us?
If you are a state or local government entity - a city, county, school district, community college, or a special district like water, sewer, or fire - yes. If you receive HHS funding, like many community clinics and nursing homes, Section 504 applies to you. When in doubt, the free scan costs nothing and tells you where you stand.
